Considering the Role of Genetics in Dental Health

Genetics and Good Teeth

Overall oral health is the product of a number of different factors, such as dietary habits, dental care practices, and also genetics. Your propensity for developing major dental problems at some point in your life will be shaped, at least in part, but each one of these considerations. Therefore, for purposes of assessing an individual patient’s chances of facing tooth decay or gum disease, dentists should pay attention to all three.

Avoiding tooth decay, as well as diseases of the gums, is largely accomplished by thorough, regular removal of plaque, tartar, and food debris from the inside of your mouth. Harmful oral bacteria take two distinct forms, namely the bacteria known for producing tooth decay and the bacteria that cause gum disease. The first consumes sugars remaining on the surface of the teeth, converts them to acids, which then erode enamel. The second type settles in the tartar and plaque on and beneath the gums. While an appropriate at-home brushing and flossing routine can eliminate most of these substances, it is essential to also schedule regular appointments with dentists for deeper cleanings.

Some patients who follow sound dental care practices still end up with excessive numbers of cavities. Genetics may be to blame in such instances. Because genes play a role in the mineral content of saliva, individuals with low concentrations will have a harder time re-mineralizing areas of the teeth harmed by tooth decay. Thus, cavities emerge in greater number and with greater seriousness.

Diet should receive close examination when it comes to assessing overall oral health. Incidence of tooth decay is known to be higher when patients frequently consume drinks and food items that contain an abundance of acid and sugar. While specific connections between certain foods and gum disease have not been identified, diet can contribute to underlying health concerns known for causing gum disease, including unmanaged diabetes.

Patients practicing appropriate dental care may also sometimes unexpectedly find that they have gum disease. Genetically influenced reactions to bacteria in the body can significantly contribute to the development of gingivitis, and individuals with naturally high mineral concentrations in their bodies often experience increased formation of tartar on the teeth, also contributing to gum disease.

Daily dental care and diet certainly play a major role in overall dental health, but it is essential that both affordable dentists and patients remember to consider the role genetics may be playing in any dental issues that arise.
