Dental Care and Your Infant – A Super Start

Across the country, dentists are gearing up for February, which is designated as National Children’s Dental Health Month. As part of the ADA’s Give Kids a Smile Program, professionals are offering much-needed dental services to children in their communities who may not otherwise have access to adequate dental care. Starting from infancy, good oral care is essential for building and keeping super smiles. Here are tips to help you keep your baby’s dental care on the right track.

Take care of baby teeth. Baby teeth appear in the first three years of life, and although they will fall out, it’s important to keep them healthy. Not only are they functional, but they also serve as placeholders for your child’s permanent teeth.

Clean your baby’s gums after feeding. Wipe their gums with a clean, moist washcloth. After teeth begin to emerge, brush them with a soft-bristled child’s toothbrush and plain water. Don’t use fluoride toothpaste until your child is at least two years old.

Brush your child’s teeth until they can do it alone. Until your child becomes more independent, supervise their brushing. Learning good dental care habits is critical for maintaining healthy teeth and gums for life.

Make sure your baby’s pacifier is clean. Don’t put it in your own mouth first or dip it in a sweet liquid.

Reduce your baby’s exposure to bacteria. This is essential for preventing tooth decay. Don’t exchange saliva with your baby by chewing food to soften it or sharing eating utensils.

Fill bottles only with water, milk, or formula. Don’t put your baby to bed with a bottle.

Feed your child a healthy diet. Include vegetables, fruits, and whole grains and limit sweet and starchy foods.
