Dental Care Essentials – How Many Times Should You Have a Teeth Cleaning this Year?

Dental Hygiene

Professional teeth cleaning is important for keeping your mouth healthy. If you want to reduce your risk of periodontal disease and tooth loss, you need to have tartar deposits removed on a regular basis. Most dental insurance policies cover at least one cleaning per year, but your dental hygienist is likely to recommend scheduling a teeth cleaning every six months. The recommendation of twice-yearly cleanings is not an arbitrary one. Once you understand the rationale behind it, you’ll see why consistency is so important.

While a teeth cleaning removes the bacteria that cause plaque, it begins to re-form within 24 to 48 hours. Even if you are practicing proper dental care at home, some plaque will return before six months have passed. The longer plaque stays on your teeth, the more of it will calcify. When it reaches that stage, you won’t be able to remove the plaque yourself—it will require the special tools of a skilled dental hygienist. If you have a professional teeth cleaning twice a year, you are less likely to experience the heavy plaque buildup that could seriously affect your oral health.

An examination by your dentist or dental hygienist can also reveal early signs of problems that are much more serious than plaque. They can spot signs of oral cancer, new cavities, receding gums, and even signs of anemia or other medical problems. Since gum disease is linked to heart disease, catching it as early as possible can even lower your risk of heart attack and stroke. If you haven’t made getting a teeth cleaning a priority, it’s not too late. Schedule an appointment today with a dentist in Reading.
