Dentures – The Affordable Answer for Lost Teeth
Millions of adults have lost some or all of their natural teeth. Losing your teeth results in problems that go far beyond aesthetics. It can affect your ability to chew food properly and may even make speaking difficult. Resulting bone loss affects facial structure and causes sagging. There’s no reason for anyone to suffer with the effects of tooth loss when affordable quality dentures are widely available. Thanks to advances in technology, today’s dentures fit better, feel better, and look more like natural teeth than dentures of the past. Two forms of dentures can restore missing teeth. Complete dentures are made for people who have no teeth. Partial dentures fill in spaces when some natural teeth still remain.
Getting Dentures: The Process
It usually takes several weeks to complete the process of getting dentures. First, the dentist performs an evaluation and chooses the best dentures for the patient. Next, the teeth, gums, and jaw are accurately measured with impressions or molds so that the completed dentures will have an exact fit. Shape and color are matched to the patient’s tissues. Finally, the dentist places the permanent dentures and makes any needed adjustments to make them comfortable. Temporary tenderness, increased saliva production, and problems speaking or swallowing may occur, but will subside quickly. Since the gums and ridges of the human mouth change over time and dentures do not, dentures need to be replaced about every three years.
Denture Maintenance and Care
It’s essential to clean dentures every day to get the best performance. Use soft brushes and warm or cool water—hot water can warp dentures. Electronic denture baths and commercial denture soaks make cleaning simple. To prevent accidental breakage, dentures should be cleaned over a partially filled basin or soft towel. It’s preferable to remove dentures at night or at least for a few hours each day. Research has revealed that not doing so increases the risks of oral cancers and damage to oral tissues.
