National Flossing Day to Spotlight Importance of Flossing

National Flossing Day

Often given short shrift in comparison to the daily dental care ritual of tooth brushing, the importance of flossing to good dental health is set to take center stage on National Flossing Day, November 29, 2013.

Flossing plays such a vital role in dental care because it works to keep tooth decay from developing and helps prevent gum disease from forming. Flossing allows for the removal of food and plaque buildup that toothbrushes simply cannot reach. This helps lower the risk of gum disease and tooth decay. People who floss regularly are better able to avoid the expense and discomfort caused by cavities and other dental health issues.

However, many individuals frequently neglect flossing because it’s more labor intensive than simple tooth brushing. Everyone should be reminded that spending just a little more time flossing each day can eliminate much of the unnecessary pain and expense that can result from poor dental care.

Dental experts suggest that floss be used at least two times daily, and proper technique is essential to reaping the full benefits. Using about 18 inches of floss is ideal, and it should be wrapped tightly around the fingers. It should then be gently passed around individual teeth, just below the gums, and then in an upward direction to dislodge plaque and food. Clean areas of floss should be utilized for each successive tooth.

Floss comes in different thicknesses and formulations, and the best way to identify the right type is to experiment. The key is to find something that is comfortable to use every single day. If hand or finger function is compromised by injury or joint inflammation, disposable dental floss holders are a terrific solution.

There really is no substitute for regular, dedicated use of floss in your dental care routine. November 29 should serve as a valuable reminder not to overlook this essential step toward achieving and maintaining a truly healthy mouth.
