Your Step-by-Step Guide to Tooth Extraction Recovery

dca-blog_tooth-extraction-wisdom-teeth

It is completely normal to experience some mild discomfort after a tooth extraction. Yet any pain and problems will steadily decline as you heal. Use these useful tips to provide toothache relief and handle the healing process.

24 Hours after a Tooth Extraction

Pain is usually greatest for the first 12 hours, but these symptoms start to subside within 24 hours as painkillers take effect. Expect tenderness in the tooth socket and some bleeding, swelling, and soreness around the gums. You can ease and expedite your recovery by following these trusted tips:

  • Rest for the first 24 hours after tooth extraction and reduce all activities for the next two days.
  • Take painkillers as prescribed for toothache relief.
  • Apply an ice bag to swollen areas for ten minutes at a time to reduce swelling.
  • Do not spit forcefully or you may accidentally dislodge the protective blood clot from the socket.
  • Gently rinse your mouth with warm saltwater to reduce your risk of infection.
  • Avoid drinking with a straw for the first 24 hours.
  • Eat soft foods the day after extraction, but add in solid foods as you heal.
  • Use a pillow when lying down to prevent bleeding.
  • Avoid the tooth extraction site when brushing and flossing to reduce the chance of complications.

48 Hours after Pulling Teeth

There should not be much pain two days after the procedure. But if you feel a sudden, throbbing pain around the area, you may have a condition called dry socket. The only way to get toothache relief is to contact your dentist immediately so you can get the proper care and medication. Be aware that swelling usually peaks at this point and gradually decreases each day after. Continue rinsing with warm saltwater and avoiding strenuous activities.

72 Hours Post-Procedure

Any bleeding will have subsided after three days, but there may be some residual swelling from the process of pulling teeth. Keep rinsing your mouth with warm saltwater to prevent infection. If you experience severe or sharp pains at this time, call your dentist immediately because you may be experiencing a complication that requires urgent care.

5 Days after Pulling Teeth

Almost all of your swelling, soreness, and pain will be gone by this point. Continue to rinse your mouth with warm saltwater and practice proper oral hygiene to reduce any risk of infection.

7 Days after a Tooth Extraction

Congratulations, you should have total toothache relief at this point. It should be safe to start enjoying your normal activities.
